Compared to the original XnView, notable features in XnView MP have been re-tweaked, enhanced and visually re-styled.

If you were scanning slides or film negatives and saving them as jpgs, for example, and put them in wrong, you could use these orientation tags to correct the images without having to deal with recompression. XnViewMP is a free software to view, organise, convert graphics and photos files or to create slide show, contact sheet, HTML pages. Though I can think of one situation to use them.

The serial number field doesn’t show up in the regular EXIF tab. in XNViewMP, use the ExifTools tab of image properties.
Comes with an easy to use yet powerful batch conversion module. The serial number won’t show up in just the regular Default display of metadata fields. XnViewMP is a powerful media browser, viewer, and converter. These orientations are rarely used, at least I've never seen them used. Then make sure that the EXIF fields are chose in the drop-down at the top of the Metadata panel on the right side of the screen. If you notice on that chart, the values of 2, 4, 5, and 7 indicate that the image is "flipped" or "mirrored" (the term ExifTool uses). As a matter of policy, be willing to accept a slight 'fuzziness' in the appearance of your thumbnails. The orientation tag also allows for mirror images. XnView MP can dynamically (and temporarily) resize the thumbs to fit which ever thumb size you select using the browser thumbnail sizer, but without changing the stored size. They do it this way because the orientation tag isn't only there to tell when images need to be rotated. An orientation of 8/Left Bottom means that the first row of pixels is the left side of the image and the first column of pixels is the bottom of the image.
